Adding two more surprises to the list, one in January 2004:
A friend of Matthew's was visiting and we were about to do some DrillSgt. Matthew asked his friend - "How much is 1 + 1?" The friend replied "4?" Matthew's response: "No, 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 is 4". Needless to say, we did not do Drill Sgt.
February 2004
Matthew told me that 50 + 50 = 100. When I asked him how he figured that out, he told me that since 5 + 5 = 10, he added a zero to each number and came up with 50 + 50 = 100.
