Algebra in First Grade?

At tonight's open house, Matthew met one of his possible first grade teachers for next year. He said "Hello Mrs. Waring" and I asked him to say something intelligent. He thought for a while and said "Mrs. Waring, I know a little algebra". She smiled and said "That's great Matthew, then you are definitely ready for 1st grade". Matthew replied "If x + x = 6, then do you know what x is? x would be equal to 3." Mrs. Waring was duly impressed and told Matthew that merited a prize.
