The Amphora Project

Author: William Kotzwinkle

I finished this book about two weeks ago, but due to systems problems, I was not able to access my blog. So, my recollections are a little fuzzier than they might ordinarily be. I should start by saying that I am not a huge sci-fi reader and I have never read anything by Kotzwinkle before. My choice of this book was fairly random - it was the first book that caught my eye during a rushed trip to the library.

With that preamble, my reaction to the book is somewhat muted. The Amphora Project is a search for eternal life. Every reader knows that those seeking eternal life (infinite knowledge, infinite wealth, etc.) never actually achieve it. Yet, I find myself rooting for them every time - even when it is fairly clear that those seekers are the anti-heros - sorry, my money will go to Dr. Faustus every time.

As for this particular rendition, it was interesting reading, although somewhat confusing at times and the strands didn't always come together, but some good characters - especially the robot and robot-blends. The proliferation of strange alien types made me feel like I was in one of those nightclub scenes in a Star Wars movie - and vaguely disoriented.

I am probably missing the wonders of this book (which is why I provide a link to Amazon), but this book did not make me want to go out and read the rest of Kotzwinkle's works (although they may be quite good).
