Truth and Consequences : A Novel

Author: Alison Lurie

As always, I find it challenging to review fiction - but I will press on, comfort in the knowledge that no one is reading this. Alison Lurie's books have a special appeal to me as they are often set in "Corinth University" - better known as Cornell University. This story involves an academic couple (he is a professor, she is an administator) whose relationship has been abrupty disrupted by his back injury. The roles of caregiver and caregetter are well explored here - with some interesting insights. In particular, he realizes that he can never be able to repay the service that his wife has given him - and that makes him resentful of her help (while he desperately needs it). Of course, there is the appearance of the "other woman" and her husband - who is also the "other man". The ending, while not an unexpected twist, is certainly not conventional or obvious. But neither is it unforgettable. In fact, I am having trouble remembering it right now.
