Installing the Dell 3000cn as a Network Printer
Turns out that the easiest way to set up access to the network printer is not completely obvious, so below are the basic instructions (also available at the Dell forums).
Trick is you need to create a port and do a Local printer install.
1. Start -> Printers and Faxes
2. File -> Add Printer
3. Click Next, then select "Local printer attached to this computer". Make sure the auto detect PNP printer option is NOT checked. Click Next.
4. The "Select a printer port" page on the wizard should now be showing. Select "Create a new port" and select "Standard TCP/IP Port". Click Next
5. The "Standard TCP/IP Printer Port Wizard" should appear. Click Next.
6. Enter the IP address of the printer and a name for the port (can be any name you desire). To find the IP address do the following on the printer.
1. Press the Menu button on the front of the printer
2. Scroll down to "Configure" and press set
3. Scroll down to "Reports" and press set
4. Scroll down to "Printer Settings" and press set
5. A report listing the IP address should print.
7. The wizard will present the "Additional Port Information Required" page. Select "Custom" for Device Type. Click on Settings. Protocol should be set to Raw and port number should be 9100 (unless you changed the default). Click OK. Click Next.
8. Click Finish - you should return back to the Add Printer Wizard. Seleect the Dell 3000cn from the driver list. I previously had the printer connected via USB and installed the downloaded driver from the internet, so the printer appeared. If you don't have the printer listed, you need to download and run the driver setup and remember what directory the files are installed to. Click on "Have Disk" to manually load this driver.
9. The rest of the screens in the add printer wizard should be straight forward.
Another related printer trick is how to print envelopes on the Dell 3000cn. The two key items are:
a) Load the envelopes face down, even though the printer indicates they should be loaded face up
b) Go to Printers and Faxes, right click on the 3000cn and choose Properties
c) Click on the Advanced tab
d) Push the Printing Defaults... button
e) Click on the Paper Tray tab
f) Push the MPF Settings... button
g) Choose Envelope
Then push OK until all the dialog boxes are done and then try printing again.
