The White Masai

Author: Corinne Hofmann
Amazon info

The author travels to Kenya with her boyfriend, but becomes entranced with a Masai. Entranced as in "give up your entire life" entranced. After returning to Switzerland (her home), she makes repeated visits until she decides to move to Kenya to be with "her Masai". Eventually, his extreme jealousy drives her back to Switzerland, but not before Ms. Hofmann writes an extraordinary story. She is a wonderfully clear writer with an excellent sense of narrative and the story is both informative and a page-turner. We see her joys and successes and her brutally difficult times living in a completely foreign world.

My only critique is that there appear to be some unflattering portraits that are left out. For example, we know that the author is a smoker - and thus she must have had to accomodate that habit - never easy in the bush - yet nothing of her smoking is described (and since bathroom issues ARE discussed, this seems like a bit of a whitewash).

But all in all, this is an enlightening book and is recommended to all. I enjoyed it tremendously, and I am NOT a travel reader by any stretch of the imagination.

Richard,

How do you find the time to read these many books? I've slacked off a bit with my reading, but trying to get more focused on this.

Let me know if you develop a fondness for African books...I read them whenever I feel homesick. I'll look up this one, and take it on our upcoming trip home to Kenya.
